What Causes Severe Rectal Bleeding After A Miscarriage?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Feb 2016
Question: Hi, I've recently had a miscarriage following IVF, (1 week ago), yesterday I had terrible lower back pain and throbbing in legs and arms. My IVF clinic advised to go to a&e to rule out infection/complications. My bloods came back higher than they should for infection but they couldn't tell me where the infection is. I have been given co-amoxiclav. Also I noticed yesterday quite a lot of rectal bleeding (I've had a little off and on for 2 months but usually only if I strain), if I have some sort of infection in that area would this have caused my body to reject the baby and miscarry? And could an "Infection" be causing the bleeding? Thanks

Brief Answer:
anal fissure or hemorrhoid has to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to the HCM
Dear going through your history ,I would like to suggest that you may need to get checked by doctor for rectal examination to rule out either anal fissure or hemorrhoid. Both can occur due to constipation and straining .
For your backache and high blood count many factors have to be ruled out. For example post miscarraige there can be chances of infection and UTI (urinary tract infection). For that, getting done urine test, urine culture and ultrasound abdomen may help to rule out UTI or pelvic infection.

Now about your question of rejection of baby after IVF , I would like to tell that there are many factors which cause miscarraige, sometimes it could be mother infection, high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia, autoimmune disease, fetal chromosomal abnormality or some time without any cause.
As your complaints of backache and high blood count happened after miscarraige so it could be less likely the cause of miscarraige. Still post miscarraige thorough examination with detailed investigations are adviced after discussing with the treating doctor to rule out any of above mentioned cause.

Hopefully my answer will be helpful for you, You may ask further anytime if you have more questions to ask.

Best regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
