default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I just had an ileostomy performed as part of surgery related to colon cancer. The I got nauseated and threw up yesterday afternoon and didn't know why. Today I am getting sick again and I am getting very little in the bag. Will a laxative or stool softener help to break the stoppage up?

Brief Answer:
Laxatives can be tried

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir

Reduced stoma output , associated with vomiting and if there is distension of abdomen , possibility of intestinal obstruction due to adhesion needs to be ruled out.

There is definitely no harm in trying laxatives. Apart from it anti-emetics like Domperidone will be helpful.

If you notice any of the following , than do not hesistae to contact your Surgeon/Primary care physician

1. Persistent Vomiting not responding to anti-emetics

2. Distension of abdomen

3. Decreased stoma output

4. Loss and appetite and reduced oral intake

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you

Take Care
