What Causes Sharp Pain In Chest And Abdomen Along With Fast Heart Beat?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Dec 2014
Question: My heart rate has been about 25 - 30 bpm higher since I went running today. It's usually around 60bpm and even in the 50s when I wake up and measure. It's consistently been 85 - 92 since I went running about 2 hours ago. I am in pretty good shape(running for 10 years, get in the top 10 sometimes in races) and usually recover really quickly. I felt a small amount of chest pressure when running today.

Also, last night it felt like my heart was pounding but it was 60 - 70bpm while lying in bed. That's a pretty normal rate except for the pounding feeling.

I have been dealing with mild chest pain, most likely from panic/anxiety for about a month and a half now. I only get some tightness, very dull pain and short sharp pains in my chest and abdomen. I don't get any pain that stops me in my tracks or keeps me from functioning. I had an EKG about a week after the panic and anxiety started. They didn't see anything unusual with my heart. Over the last month most of the symptoms of anxiety have gone away except for two things and what's happening today. The two things that remain are a shaking/trembling feeling in my neck/spine that I sometimes feel all day but mostly feel just when lying down at night for bed. I haven't had panic attacks for about three weeks and even then they were dwindling.

Brief Answer:
A cardiac stress test/exercise stress test should be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking Health care magic forum.

I have gone through your query.Anxiety can cause such symptoms. But a cardiac cause should be ruled out before starting therapy for anxiety.A cardiac stress test should be taken to rule out any problem.A holter recording for 24 hours will be needed to rule out any kind of dysrhythmias also.Your serum electrolytes also should be checked.
If those are clear then you can go on with treating anxiety by measures like yoga or breathing techniques and medications.Anxiolytics like alprazolam or betablockers like propranolol taken regularly can control such symptoms.
Hope this may help you.Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
