Brief Answer:
possibly shingles
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
It is possible that it may be shingles.
This is associated with initial pain in the area followed by the appearance of a rash.
Though in most cases, vesicles (small water filled lesions) are present, it can vary from one person to the next.
Shingles can occur in anyone with a previous history of chicken pox.
There is a shingles vaccine which can be used if you have recurrent painful episodes.
Shingles is treated with the use of pain medication and anti viral medication which would be available with a prescription from your doctor.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I appreciate your help! Even though I don't like your answer. Shingles didn't even come to my mind!
I'm sorry, I have one more question, are shingles contagious? I have an 87 yr old mother I interact with a lot and I don't want to expose her if it's going to affect her. If I'm not sure, she has had the vaccine!

Brief Answer:
contagious if contact with rash
Detailed Answer:
HI
Sorry about the late reply
Shingles can be contagious if the rash is uncovered (when it is in the blister phase).
When the lesions crust over then it is no longer contagious.
Once your mum is not in contact with the lesions, she should be fine.
