Question: Hello, I get skipped beats from time to time. I se a cardiologist regularly. I had an echo about a month ago
and it was fine. He always tells me they are benign. Today I had some skipped beats that really hurt.
They caused discomfort. Should I go to the er and get a cardiogram. I called my regular Dr. and he
said it was probably nothing to worry about, but now I am very nervous and anxious about it.
Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Causes to skipped heart beats...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
I am glad to know that the echo you had 1 month ago resulted fine. This can assure you that nothing bad is happening to your heart. Apart cardiac echo, have you also had:
- EKG?
- Holter monitoring?
I have also noticed that you reported "some anemia" in your medical history. Please bare in mind that anemia (even if it is mild) might commonly cause palpitations or skipped heart beats which are not serious.
Are you also having problems like:
- heartburn?
- abdominal gas?
Being nervous/anxious will increase the skipped heart beats, putting you inside a vicious circle.
I suggest to :
- calm down
- take deep breathes
- have chamomile tea or any other tranquilizer drugs prescribed by your doctor
- avoid coffee or caffeine drinks (including energetic drinks)
If after calming down, you will still feel skipped heart beats, you can go to ER and do EKG and holter monitoring.
At the end, it very important to control anxiety/nervousness. You can also discuss with your doctor about diagnosing reflux in order to start proper treatment.
Hope it was of help!
