What Causes Slurred Speech And Breathing Issue After Taking Skelaxin?

Posted on Mon, 13 Mar 2017
Question: My 15 year old daughter took Skelaxin and developed slurred speech and other serious side effects such as trouble breathing, itchiness, leg pain, chest pain, and irritability. We visited the ER and were given Benadryl and one other antihistamine. It is about 48 hours later and she still has slurred speech and some itchiness. How long will these symptoms last? We are most concerned about the slurred speech. thanks

Brief Answer:
Possible contribution of medication side effects.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

At this stage an allergic reaction should be waning. Slurred speech is not a typical manifestation, especially after 2 days. The
Skelaxin should be out of her system by now.

It is not clear whether she is continuing the antihistaminics or not. If yes in my opinion it should be considered whether it might not be a side effect of medication. If she is under two antihistamine medications, their side effects add to each other and they may produce drowsiness, somnolence and slurred speech. In particular promethazine (phenergan) has produced such an effect in a few of my patients.

So if that is the case I would contact your doctor to ask if possibly one of the two antihistamines might be interrupted.

If she's not taking any medication now I still would consider that as a possibility and would give it one more day for the effects of the medications to wear out. If still persisting should be checked again.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
