What Causes Sore Breasts When On Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: I haven't had a period in three years, I am on an oral birth control pill for migraine headaches, I take the active pills, skip the inactive and continue with the active. I am also taking the medication Griseofulvin for nail fungus which says to use two forms of birth control while on this medication; my husband also uses a condom. I started having breast nipple tenderness about 4 days ago. What could be the cause?

Brief Answer:
Hormonal imbalance...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Having breast nipple tenderness while not having a period in three years is indicative for:
- periods-to-come: although you had no periods these 3 years, it does not mean that you won't have them anymore. Increased nipple tenderness might be a signal for an upcoming period.

- hormonal oscillations might also cause nipple tenderness although no period is present

- If you are also having any further problem with breast skin (laceration?, any lump?), then, should be further evaluated by dermatologist to start immediate treatment.

I advise to:
- keep a good hygiene of your breasts
- take OTC anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation (tenderness)
- apply alternating cold and warm compresses can also reduce tenderness
- do monthly check ups of your breasts and armpits for the presence of lumps or other masses.

Hope it helped! If anything unclear, just ask!
