Brief Answer:
it depends

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the pain of urinary tract obstruction is usually excruciating. Since you've experienced it in the past (I suppose!), you should be able to recognize its characteristics. Besides the pain, nausea is common, sometimes vomiting occurs and an urgency to urinate. The patient cannot lie still and moves constantly in a hopeless effort to reduce the pain.

If the aforementioned description fits your case then you should definitely visit the ER right away. Otherwise it's probably another cause. Despite that, if you don't have a better explanation for the pain (like a muscle strain or sprain of the back) then you'd better not risk damage to your only kidney and visit the ER to investigate the cause.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
