What Causes Spotting During Pregnancy?

Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: I went to Emergency because I had very light spotting (once a day only when I wipe). They did an ultrasound and blood work. My ultrasound showed "fluid filled cyst like stucture" measuring 7.7mm (the technician told me that it looks like I'm measuring 5 weeks, and it's too early to see anything else) my beta levels were 18500. I went for more blood work 3 days later and my beta had only gone up to 24500.

Do the non doubling beta results mean impending miscarriage?

Also, the doctor seems to think that because they did not see a yolk or fetal pole at 5 weeks, that is a bad sign. But I heard that 5 weeks is too soon to see that stuff. what is the case?

Lastly, do high beta levels mean that they should see the yolk, fetal pole and hear a heartbeat sooner than normal?(ie; at 5 weeks instead of 6)

Brief Answer:
Probable Miscarriage

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If beta hCG was 18,500 technicians should have seen heart beat along with fetal pole, Yolk sac. If technician is competent and performed accurate ultrasound, then this is miscarriage. This is supported by fact that beta hCG has not doubled.

generally gestational sac should be seen by 5 weeks and heart beat by 6 weeks. But beta hCG levels are so high that they should have been seen by now.

Get ultrasound scan done after one week to confirm the heart beat.
