What Causes Sudden Hearing Loss?

Question: I have 7 mm extra axial enhancing lesion with dural tail at left cerebellopontine angle suggesting a most likely meningioma just discovered after MRI taken due to sudden hearing loss in that ear. 2 ENT's say that they are not sure if the possible meningioma is a cause or just a condition of a sudden hearing loss which just occurred about weeks ago and was the reason for the MRI.. What should be some possible next steps?

Hi

Thanks for posting the query. I will try my best to help you out with this problem.

The presence of meningioma in the cerebello-pontine angle could be the cause of your sudden hearing loss. The meningioma could be compressing the cochlear nerve thus causing the hearing loss. You need to get further audiological investigations to confirm the sensori-neural hearing loss.

Secondly, not all ENT specialists will be competent enough to diagnose this problem. My sincere suggestion to you is to consult a good Neurosurgeon or a Neuro-otologist for a complete evaluation and management.

Also, you will require a course of oral steroids and a peripheral vasodilators to reduce any pressure or swelling around the cochlear nerve.

Thank you. Your opinion is consistent with the 2 ENT's I have seen so far...They have me on prednisone 60 mg per day and acyclovar 5 per. Day, but neither has yet recommended peripheral vasodilators to reduce pressure or swelling around the cochlear nerve. I see an ENT subspecialist tomorrow who was recommended by both ENT's. He is Dr XXXXXXX Bartell in XXXXXXX I will keep you posted and greatly appreciate your opinions.
