What Causes Sudden Heart Palpitations And Chest Pain?

Question: My 17 year old daughter is experiencing a sudden rapid heartbeat and a feeling of pain in her chest (behind the stirnum). Is this serious?
Brief Answer:
it could be serious
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It is not common for teenagers to have heart problems. However, her symptoms are concerning and she should be evaluated by a physician as soon as possible. She needs an exam and probably an electrocardiogram. If her symptoms persist then she may need to see a cardiologist. You will have to make an assessment about how severe her pain is. If her pain is severe and her heart rate is very fast then you need to take her to the Emergency Department. If it is not too severe then make an appointment with a doctor for her.
