What Causes Sudden Onset Of Missed Period At The Age Of 48?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: I started my period at age 17. My mother went through menopause at age 58. I exercise a great deal -- running, tennis, and weight lifting. My periods just flat out stopped in August. No spotting, nothing. Took pregnancy test....negative. Blood was drawn FSH level was 39. I am 48. However, I have absolutely NO symptoms of menopause and feel better than I have ever felt in my life. Normal everything....no fog, no hot flashes, normal libido, no dryness. My iron was slightly elevated. Could this really be menopause. I want to do hormones when I am in menopause, but I feel great and don't want to mess that up? Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
this is perimenopausal state

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for contacting HCM.
At 48 , if your menses have stopped suddenly and have not resumed since then and its been 4 months now and if the pregnancy test is negative but the FSH is 39 which is way high , it does indicate towards a perimenopausal state.
You need to get a hormonal profile with FSH and LH done again to reconfirm . If the FSH levels are more than 35 and that of LH are more than 30 then you are entering into perimenopausal state or a state of ovarian failure. Perimenopause presents generally 2 years prior to actual menopause when menses get irregular and hormones go high. You may experience 1 or 2 menses in a year before the menses completely stop indicating a menopause.

Do you recommend hormones in the perimenopause state even if you have no symptoms? (to protect bones and skin?)

Brief Answer:
no i don't recommend hormones in early stages at all

Detailed Answer:
no hormones are not recommended at all if no symptoms are present. In fact most of the menopausal symptoms can be taken care of with healthy life style changes itself. The major concern is usually hot flushes and osteopenia, which can often be taken care by taking food rich in natural oestrogen's and taking calcium supplements or dairy products rich in calcium regularly and also maintaining good hydration plays a very important role combating perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms.
