What Causes Sudden Pain While Swallowing And Chest Pain In A Teenager?

Question: My daughter is 16 years old 5' 8" 131 lbs and active in tennis. She does not take any medication and has no known allergies. She is having pains that come and go in central right side of her chest wall. She also is now getting those pains when she swallows. Earlier today it hurt to take a deep breath and now it hurts to just take short breaths.

She was seen in the ER September of 2014 for chest pain that was moving around to the back. She ended up getting ultrasounds of her organs that showed no signs of any issues at that time with any of her organs. They said if she continued to have the pains that they may end up doing a scope to see what else may be going on. These pains seem to come and go with no obvious trigger.

The only thing that seems strange is that she started getting the pains about 6 months after she was injured in tennis in 2010. We took her to the ER for hearing a pop in her back during a serve that forced her to her knees and she could not walk off the court. She had to be carried. They did not do an x-ray in the hospital, just said she probably pulled a muscle.

Brief Answer:
A muscle pull likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain on one side of the chest wall that hurts on breathing is likely to be due to a muscle pull or a muscle injury in the area.
The muscle injuries can take long to heal if proper rest is not given. She needs to avoid any overhead activities for at least two weeks. Using a chest belt of appropriate size for support will also help. She can do a hot compress and apply a local analgesic gel till then for temporary relief.
I hope this answers your query.
