What Causes Sudden Popping In Abdomen Followed By Pronounced Pain Upon Coughing?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Hi, I was just at the gym and felt a fairly pronounced "pop" in my lower left abdominals while using the triceps pull down machine. I'm a 50 year old male in good health and regularly work out. I've never felt anything like that before and concerned I may have a hernia. Not a lot of pain, more like I notice something happened there. Pain maybe a 2 on a scale of 1-10, somewhat more pronounced when I cough. No swelling and no discoloration. Could it be an abdominal strain that might heal with rest also? Thanks-

Brief Answer:
could be due to strain

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. There is a possibility that its nothing to worry about. If there is no previous history of hernia then that could have appeared due to strain. Hernia is common in older age because with age, abdominal wall becomes weaken. I would suggest you to observe closely for following signs:

1. Recurrent formation of swelling while lifting load
2. swelling regresses when lying down.
3. Pain at the site of swelling

If above mentioned signs appear then you can visit hospital and get an appointment for a "Consultant Surgeon" for examination and further workup.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
