What Causes Sudden Severe Tooth Ache 5 Years After Root Canal Treatment?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Aug 2015
Question: Hi, have a tooth that has had root canal treatment, about 5 years ago. Twice since I've had toothache that has gone with an antibiotic and pain killer. Its back tonight with a vengeance. Taken panadol and codeine and ibuprofen - to little effect. I live hours from an emergency dept (and don't feel it's at that stage), but wondered if I could start taking an antibiotic (I have some but they have an expiration date of 2011 Erythryomcin). Would it be safe to take? XXXX

Brief Answer:
reinfection in root canal treated tooth, gum infection, medication

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the root canal treated tooth is concerned, it can be because of the improperly treated root canal treatment resulting in reinfection. The other possible cause can be a gum infection in a root canal treated tooth.
Nothing to be panic, consult a oral physician and get it evaluated. Mean while you can take a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole(if you are not allergic) along with codeine. You cannot take a expired drug. It is not safe.
You can take these drugs and the infection will come down. Later you can consult a oral physician and get it treated. You need to take a radiograph to confirm the diagnosis.
I hope oi have answered your query. If you have any queries reply me back. Take care.
