What Causes Swelling During Treatment After Knee Surgery
I have a question. After knee surgery, I received Synvisc one injections in my knee. The first injection left me with swelling and some discomfort for about 6 weeks and then it subsided. 6 months later, I received the next one, I started the next day to feel ill and was umcomfortable and then by the next day it was worse then before or after surgery pain. So I went back in and they removed over 100 cc of this green stuff from my knee. I was told this was a reaction.
What can cause this ? Is it the chicken ?
Is this common?
What alternatives are there to take next time?
I was told there was another 3 dose one to try.
The shots help tremendously, and I am able to go running and biking after about 3 weeks so I want to continue with them.
Thanks
It is due to local reaction in the knee.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After Synivisc one injection, the immediate swelling and fluid collection can cause a local reaction causing the fluid to ooze out and collect in the knee. It is not a rare reaction and can be managed easily.
You can self monitor the knee for any rise in temperature or acute pain. In case the fluid collects again then it is best to rule out any infection by doing a culture sensitivity done.
Proper aseptic measures next time can decrease such a reaction or the chances of infection. The injections are helpful in decreasing the arthritic pain.
I hope this answers your query.
