What Causes Swelling In Right Side Of The Stomach?

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Jul 2014
Question: About a week ago I began to notice an extension emerging from the area of my stomach where the rigyt kidney is located. The swelling has grown a little each day and today I'm beginning to feel muscle ache on my lower back. Otherwise all systems seem normal with no abnormality in kidney function, as far as I can tell. Have an appointment with a doctor next Tuesday. Is this symptom serious enough that I should go to the local ER ?

Brief Answer:
I would suggest to report to the local ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

It is good to know that your Diabetes is under control, and you are maintaining it with your diet and proper exercises.

Although it is difficult to tell you with certainty without a physical examination of the swelling, with your history, it seems to me as if you might be developing a lumbar hernia, or some kind of swelling arising from an intra-abdominal organ on the right side, which could be kidney, adrenal, a part of gut or glands of lymphatic system. This is just to inform you about the possibilities, and not to get you apprehensive.

However, next Tuesday seems to be an extended time period, and I would like to suggest you to report to the local ER initially now, so that they could do the basic investigations like blood tests, and ultrasound/CT/MRI as the case might be, and with a probable diagnosis refer you to the appropriate specialist.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
