What Causes Swelling In The Hands After Receiving Betnesol Injection?
Question: My relative is pregrant and it is just the start of 8 weeks for her. However, she has been advised Betnesol 4mg injections every 24 hours. She has taken it yesterday and has been experiencing swelling on hands. When she enquired with the doctor/pharmacist, she was not told what the injection is for. I found out on net that it is a steroid and to be taken with caution/avoided during pregnancy. Can you please let me know whether this is OK or I need to caution her?
Brief Answer:
Not Ok if the reason for starting it is not know.
Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for posting your query.
See, Steroids are very essential drugs in certain conditions but if taken over long period it has got many significant side effects . You said she is in 8th week of pregnancy and if taken throughout pregnancy it means she has to take for 7 months . 7 months is a long course and cause serious side effects .
Hence it is very essential to know the reason why Betnesol has been advised . Kindly get in touch with the concerned doctor and know the reason. Else better stop it .
Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.
Regards.

Thank you for your quick response.
Sorry that my earlier mesg had a typo-error. She is 8 months pregnant (start of 8th month .. a couple of days before). She has been advised 3 doses of Betnesol 4mg injection every 24 hrs. Is this OK/safe? The main doctor is out of town and not accessible presently. The current incharge has given this. Can 3 doses of 4 mg be detrimental in whatsoever case is the main concern. Suggest your opinion.
Browsed info and got the mesg that steroids should not be started/ended abruptly and hence the follow up question.

Brief Answer:
Go ahead and get it , no problem
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Oh , she is 8th month pregnant. Then it's fine 3 doses of Betnesol shall not harm her or the fetus ( the baby ) . Go ahead and take it .
But still try to find out the reason .
Steroid can be started abruptly , no problem in that. But if the steroids are given for longer duration like few weeks to months then it should not be stopped abruptly. In your wife's cases it's only 3 doses , so no need to worry for stopping abruptly. Go ahead.
Regards.
