Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: I had an allergic reaction to a pain killer eight weeks ago. My face especially my lips became very swollen and warm. Today I was on an airplane and all of a sudden the right side of my face starting swelling in the same way. I did not eat or drink or take medicine out of the ordinary. I was in the sun a lot over the last few days but am not sun burned. Any idea what is going on?

Brief Answer:
Take antihistamine. may not be allergy but mere anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and I understand your concern. Lips swelling and warmth out of a sudden with no intake of food or anything in specific on a plane should still be given antihistamine as a benefit of the doubt. So get any antihistamines available on the plane and prefer only fluids and juices till landing. There must be some first aid kit in the plane they have for any such allergic reactions or any other medical aid.

Go to a doctor then and have yourself tested. I would recommend antigen allergens sensitivity tests to sort out the cause.

There is no harm in getting evaluated.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.

I am no longer on the plane. I am not at all anxious. I took two Benadryl tablets. Do you think this relates to my prior allergic reaction? If swelling does not decrease within an hour or so from taking the medicine should I go to an urgent care? The swelling is painful.

Brief Answer:
Could be a relation. Get evaluated if not respinding in a day or two

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back to me

Yes if the swelling is not responding to benadryl and is painful then take some ibuprofen and wait for a day or two if not an emergency or swelling does not increase in size. If it does then you should get evaluated for other causes. So yes go to a doctor and let them have a look.

With recent allergic reaction I would say it may be correlated with that and should be worked up and sorted out for the cause and etiology. I am sure a benign and self resolving diagnosis will show up.

I hope it helps.
