What Causes Swelling, Pain And Redness In Cheeks?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: My husband has a lot of swelling, redness and pain of the cheeks and nose. That started on Monday and by Tuesday he had swollen a lot more. A CT scan was done yesterday by an ear nose and throat surgeon and nothing showed - no infection or anything. He is on prednisone 20mg once a day and 500mg twice a day of cefurorime axetil and started on it yesterday, Tuesday, afternoon. We go back to the Specialty doctor, Fri, very late afternoon. He will be 65 in XXXXXXX has been retired since 2010. He did not bump his head or face, has no open sores, has lost 22 lbs on purpose. Do you have any ideas of what it could be or what type of tests that should be run. I was also wondering if we should call in an infectious disease doctor? Thanks for any input you have.

Brief Answer:
Probably Angioneurotic edema,to be evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,

I understand your query and concern.

As per the symptoms your husband probably seem to have Angio neurotic edema secondary to allergy.

I advise him to get CBC with differential,Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) level,D-dimer level,Urinalysis,Antinuclear antibody (ANA) testing,CH50 level,Thyroid studies, including levels of thyroid stimulating hormone, free T4, and thyroid autoantibodies, stool culture,Rheumatoid factor, Cryoglobulin levels,Imaging studies and chest x ray.

In recurrent episodes he should also get C1 esterase inhibitor levels and C4 levels.

Drugs like Tab.Levocetrizine thrice daily along with prednisone should be taken.

NOTE: These drugs should be taken under strict medical prescription of your doctor.

Post your further queries if any,

Thank you.

Thank you. The Drs. Didn't find the reason for his nose & face swelling. They did a ct scan & blood work & nothing showed. It was recommended he sees a rheumatologist. I'm not sure why. But he sees him July 31st.

The referral to a Rheumatologist is made probably on the grounds to rule connective tissue or autoimmune disorder.

My husband is having more issues. His left knee swelled while sleeping on May 3rd & the pain woke him up. It was red & hot. In 5/5 the er Dr tried to drain it & nothing came out but a little blood. Went to an orthopedic the next day on 5/6 & since he could only see the needle marks, he guessed it may have been a cyst. On 5/7 his left foot swelled was hot & red. The swelling started to go down on 5/8 & was gone by 5/9. Today 5/10 again his left foot, left hand on top near his thumb on top & his left elbow also swelled, turned red & is hot. His hand had swelled a week to two weeks ago in the same place but we thought he had bumped it. Also, he has been hoarse for over a Yr & he is seeing Drs. For that. He has an earache & Dr has put him on Levofloxacin 500 for 7 days. He started that on 5/8/15. He never gets earaches either. Please help. We don't have a clue as to what he has or who to see.

Brief Answer:
Hospitalization needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the update..

The condition seems very progressive, I would strongly recommend him to be hospitalized and be examined by a immunologist and a rheumatologist.. I believe a constant observation on him could help to find the signs pointing at a diagnosis.

Wish you good health.
