What Causes Swollen Tonsils With Yellow Spots Over Them?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: I have had my tonsils bother me my whole life so I've gotten used to taking amococlin (sp) and moving on. This time they have been swollen for over a week, with white and yellow spots all over. I'm on my 6th day of amococilin (so) and I was just using my dentalpik and the water blast tore my tonsil

Brief Answer:
You have widened the narrowed tonsillar crypt...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through the history and examined the image thoroughly.

The groove noticed over the right tonsil is actually the the tonsillar crypt which had narrowed due to the tonsillar inflammation.
As there is lot of pus filled areas over the tonsil, plain amoxicillin may not be beneficial.

You can try a combination of either amoxicillin and clavulanic acid or plain clarithromycin.

1. Drink plenty of warm water.
2. Use povidone iodine throat spray or mouth gargles.
3. Avoid removing the slough over tonsils by yourself. As it is inflamed, the chances of bleeding will be more.
4. Avoid chilled food and beverages/alcohol/smoking/coffee/fizzy drinks, if any.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.

Is it possible for you to call in prescriptions for the above medications, throat rinse? Does it look like I'll need surgery to get them out? I am sexually active, would be giving oral do more harm?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics have to be requested by your doctor...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome back

The prescription for antibiotics can be requested by your treating doctor. Rest of the medicines such as antiinflammatory and throat spray or gargles can be obtained over the counter without prescription.

Tonsillectomy is advised when there is more than 4 attacks of sore throat per year.

There is no harm in giving oral. But ensure, you rinse your throat with warm water or use the povidone iodine spray after the act.

Wish you good luck and good health.
