Question: My husband had a hip replacement about 3 years ago. Says his hip is fine but continues to have pain running down his thigh. says it feels like he can feel bones rubbing together. all doctor visits and xrays say the surgery was successful and nothing is wrong. So why does he still have pain?
Brief Answer:
Pain can be due to nerve compression in spine
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. Pain after hip replacement is not uncommon. it can be due to nerve compression or muscle weakness. I want to know little detail of the illness.
1.HOw long your husband has hip problem before he went for surgery?
2.Does he have Diabetes or smoker?
3.Is this pain also on normal side or only on operated side?
Please send me answers of these questions. I will try my best to help you.
thanks

He is a smoker but does not have diabetes. He had hip problems for 4 years before surgery. He walked with a cane prior and has continued to usee cane since. the pain is on the operated leg only and seems to be on the outside/ front on the thigh.
Brief Answer:
It can be due to neuropathy
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for replying. Pain and tingling on thigh is most probably due to nerve problems. It can be due to smoking also. Since there was a long gap between disease starting and surgery so that may also have caused weakness. I have following suggestions.
1.He should take Methylcobalamine and Calcium daily. 1000 microgram vitamin B 12 daily and 1000 mg calcium daily.
2.Tablet Pregabalin M at night time.
3.Protein in diet should be taken like protein powder, curd, milk, butter milk, fish, chicken etc.
4.If pain continues then get MRI of the spine. It will show if there is any disc herniation is there.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
