Posted on Tue, 19 May 2015
Question: I have a tingling almost a burning in my thighs. Sometimes it is in my hips. Could it be shingles, I have had chicken pox. The burning eventually subsides but has been going on for a few months. I seems the longer I stand upright the more burning effect there is present.

Brief Answer:
Seems like nerve injury or damage

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

a burning sensation without visible findings (like redness of the skin etc) is most likely a nerve injury. I have not understood whether the symptoms are unilateral or bilateral. If they are unilateral then I would suspect pressure on the nerve root that supplies the affected area. This pressure could be attributed to a prolapsing intervertebral disc, to a tumor or other causes. This also explains the fact that you have worse symptoms when standing for long.

If the symptoms are bilateral then neuropathy is possible which is sometimes symmetric. Neuropathy could be caused by various conditions including drugs, toxins, alcohol, viruses, immunologic disorders etc

Shingles (unilateral) cannot last for months without any visible evidence of the virus (blisters) at some time during its course. If you had blisters in the start then symptoms could remain even after the blisters were gone.

I hope I've helped!
