What Causes Tingling And Numbness In Little Finger?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: Hi,

From past 4-5 days, my little finger on my left hand is becoming numb, and i feel a tinging sensation through-out the day. Also on touching the finger, I feel this sensation, but as such it isn't causing me any other major issue. This tinging sensation though has propagated to my ring finger in last 2 days as well. Kindly let me know what could be the cause of such a abnormal sensation throughout the day, and if there's anything be alarmed of.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of ulnar neuropathy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms. They are most likely to be due to ulnar neuropathy on the left side- a disease of the ulnar nerve, which supplies sensations to the little and ring finger.

The most common cause of ulnar neuropathy is compression at the level of elbow, when we sit with placing elbows on table, or while sleeping with arms under our body.

There is no need to worry, as it improves on own in a few days. However, if it does not improve, you can meet a neurologist and get nerve conduction studies done to diagnose the problem.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dear Sir,

Thank-you for your reply.
Until when can I expect the tinging sensation on my ring & little fingers to recover? Also is there a way to massage the ulnar nerve to cure the sensation earlier than naturally?

Best Regards,

Brief Answer:
May take 4-6 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

The recovery would depend on the severity of the nerve problem, however, it usually takes 4-6 weeks to recover.

Physiotherapy and exercises may help in faster recovery. Massage may not help.

Best wishes,
