What Causes Tongue Irritation With Pain And Burning Sensation?
Question: I have an irritation on the back left side of tongue (asymmetrical) that appears like a cluster of skin tags. There is one resting forward on top of other smaller bumps/skin tag like things. Can folliate papillae look like skin tags? It has been irritating me for three months but I only noticed the bumps back there 2 months ago. It hurts like a sore, burn or when you irritate your taste buds.
Brief Answer:
Not likely to be cancer.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. From your description, this seems to be an inflamed circumvallate papilla or the normal appearance of the side of the tongue.
2. If you can upload a close-up image, it will be helpful.
3. Infections (including fungal), reflux, a sharp tooth, low hemoglobin (anemia), nutritional deficiencies (Vitamin B complex) are some of the common causes for glossitis. Treatment of the cause will heal the tongue.
4. An examination and if abnormal, a biopsy will settle the diagnosis. This does not seem to be cancer.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.

Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. This appearance of the side of the tongue is commonly seen. Sometimes, it is a mild early leukoplakia, viral lesions, oral lichen or islands of normal lymphoid tissue. This unlikely to be cancer.
2. If you still have a doubt, get a small excision biopsy done. It will settle the diagnosis.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
