Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: What causes unilateral eye swelling during menstruation. I am 45 and this just started a couple months ago but it looks horrendous. If it's hormone changes, which hormone is causing this and how can I treat or prevent it? Hormone pills (birth control)? Which one do you recommend ?

Brief Answer:
This does not resemble a hormone related problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that you are having the problem of unilateral eye swelling during menstruation.

This is unlikely to be related to hormonal changes as it is unilateral condition and if it was were to be because of hormonal imbalance it would have been bilateral involving both the eyes.

This can be because of infection of the glands of the eyelids. Infections are quiet common during menstruation because of decreased immunity during this period.
I would like to treat this condition with the use of antibiotic eye ointments like ciprofloxacin eye ointment and you need to continue analgesic drugs like ibuprofen.

I would not recommend hormone pills as this does not looks like hormone related problem.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
