Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern .
Some amount of spotting or bleeding might occur a few days after periods.
Sexual activity may further stimulate uterine cramping leading to such bleeding.
If generally she has regular periods and this was a once off thing, please do not worry about it.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

Just to follow up on the first question I asked regarding my wife's period.
So as I explained in my first question, her period has been always regular except the last couple of weeks. Here is a summary of her period and bleeding pattern
She got her last regular period the week of Nov 13 which lasted a week then it stopped as expected but instead she got it again on Nov.28th and that one lasted one week too, that was when I asked you the first question, I got your reply and we also went to our family doctor and she mentioned hormone fluctuations.
Then nothing between Dec.4th to 12, however since last night when she wipes she does see a pink discharge again,at this point it doesn't sound like a regular period but it may very well be.
I guess my question is how long the hormone changes can affect someone's period? she turned 40 back in XXXXXXX
Do we have to wait and see or visit our family doctor again? she no any other symptoms associated and she had a normal PAP test done 6 months ago
One last thing, she does have a Mirena IUD placed in her last year replacing the old one.
I can also try have her take a pregnancy test but is very unlikely because she no symptoms related to that plus she has the IUD...

Hello
I understand your worry.
I wish you would have mentioned the Mirena IUD earlier too.
Mirena itself can cause such irregular spotting and bleeding, and hormonal imbalance, as Mirena contains hormones.
Plus at 40, hormone changes set in, which might persist for a longer time, until she eases off into menopause.
Just take a pregnancy test anyways, but yes, the chances are very remote that she is pregnant, considering that the IUD is in.
As long as her Pap is normal, do not worry.
When was the ultrasound scan done ?
Just get yearly ultrasound scan and Pap smear and then dont worry if such erratic spotting occurs, it can readily be put down to the Mirena, and perimenopause, since she is in her forties.
Take care.

Thanks Dr XXXXXXX for your replies, I got one more to ask you,
Since her last (on time) period was back in around the week of Nov 14
And since Yesterday she has started getting her period again...
Is it possible that what happened in between (the slight bleeding that lasted for a week from (NOV 28-DEC03) was as a result of either IUD/Hormone changes? and what is happening since yesterday is her "normal" period time? because from Nov 14 until yesterday is a full three weeks and a half

Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Yes, that seems most likely.
Around perimenopause, and with the Mirena in, sometimes, characterization of normal menstrual cycles, and intermenstrual bleeding, becomes difficult.
It is best to maintain a menstrual diary, and keep a track to try and fathom the patterns.
Take care.
