What Causes Vaginal Soreness And Increased Vaginal Discharge Post Period?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Oct 2016
Question: Every month a week after my period I have vaginal soreness and an increase in discharge. I have been to the doctor a number of times checking for infection and there never is. After a few days I am fine. However, the soreness is horrible, feeling like a yeast infection. Could I be sore due to cervical fluid? Can my vagina be sore due to ovulation? What treatment can I try?

Brief Answer:
Sounds like Atrophic Vaginitis, please consult gynea to confirm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thank you very much for posting your query directly to me.

I have carefully studied your symptoms and I understand your concern.

From your description, I think you are suffering from atrophic vaginitis, since infections have been ruled out through multiple tests, and your symptoms are limited to a particular interval where the hormone levels are at their lowest, it is most likely that you are suffering from atrophic vaginitis induced by hormonal disturbance owing to you nearing menopausal age.

1. It is unlikely to be due to cervical fluid.
2. Vagina does not become sore due to ovulation.

3. As for treatement, the exact diagnosis needs to be made, so I suggest you to consult your gynecologist and get yourself examined to confirm the nature of the problem.

If it is confirmed that the problem is indeed due to atrophic vaginitis, local application of hormone containing creams/jelly will be all that will be required.

These creams can be obtained in your local pharmacy, however, you will need a prescription to buy them.

Kindly visit your gynecologist and get the same prescribed.

I am positive that you will benefit from this.

I hope I have answered your query. Do feel free to write back to me if you have additional concerns.

Wishing you good health.

Best regards.

Hi,

Are hormone levels at my lowest the week after my period? Why do I feel better vaginally closer to my period? Are there over the counter treatments you can suggest? I am only 43 years old? Is this getting close to menopause? At what age do hormones change in a woman?

Brief Answer:
Hormone levels are lowest at the beginning of menstrual flow.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for writing back to me.

1. The hormones levels are at their lowest just before when the bleeding starts, thereafter they gradually increase till mid cycle and then they increase rapidly near ovulation and then they gradually fall off till the end of the cycle.

2. Feeling better vaginally closer to your periods is most likely due to decreased vaginal secretions near the start of periods due to low hormone levels.

3. Over the counter treatments could work if the condition is confirmed. The most crucial part of any treatment is, proper diagnosis. So, it would be ideal to consult your local gynecologist first to confirm what exactly is the reason for the soreness and increased vaginal discharge, is it just atrophic vaginitis or is there something else going on needs to be confirmed by a physical examination.

4. You are 43 years of age, and yes that is getting closer to menopausal age, menopause can set in anywhere between 40 and 50 years, average menopausal age is 45 years.

5. Hormones start to fluctuate around 40 years of age, and they start reducing as the age progresses and most of the symptoms of post menopausal women are usually due to the steady decline in the hormone levels.

I hope this information will be useful to you.

Warm regards.
