default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: I got up this morning with vertigo. Room was spinning and when I tried to put on my socks I fell back into bed. Picture on the wall appeared to be moving about in a circle. I am still feeling unbalanced, but better.
I am wondering if I need to make an appointment with my regular doctor.

Brief Answer:
should consider being seen

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Vertigo is most commonly due to conditions of the inner ear though there are other causes as well.

The inner ear causes are: (1) vestibular neuronitis- most common cause, vertigo lasts for hours at a time. May be history of a recent illness.

(2)benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) - in this case, the vertigo is worse with certain head positions, it lasts second to a few minutes.

(3)meniere's disease- the vertigo lasts for a few mins to few hours, may be associated with hearing loss and tinnitus (abnormal noises in the ear)

There are other causes but these are the most common.

It may be best to be seen even though the symptoms have improved slightly at the moment.
Your regular doctor should be able to give you an idea of the likely cause when she or he assesses you, so for a definitive diagnosis, you should be seen.

There are medications that can be used temporarily to help eg valium, meclizine, dramamine, lorazepam

If it is vestibular neuronitis, the medication would be used for a few days then stopped as the body tries to heal itsel.

If it is BPPV then a maneuver called EPley maneuver would be demonstrated by your doctor, this set of moves are helpful in BPPV. Again medication for a short time.

If it is meniere's the in addition the meds mentioned , a low salt diet along with the use of diurectics, may also be used

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
