Question: Hi
I have a hard vein like thing which is not protruding but can be palpable along the umbilicus (including both sides) around 2 cm in width and 12 cm is length on my abdomen. Noticed few days back , no pain but since I pressed it to see a slight discomfort. Could you please advise?

Brief Answer:
It could be thrombosed veins or tendons of anterior abdominal wall muscles.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
The hard structure you noticed could be a thrombosed vein or tendons of the muscles of anterior abdominal wall. If there is no pain then there should not be anything to worry about.
You could send us a photograph as it is quite difficult to comment as to what it is without examining it. Or you could see your GP or a Physician who could examine you and tell what it is.
Thrombosis of superficial veins can happen in many circumstances but thrombosis on both sides is extremely rare and therefore I dont think that would be the cause.
So, let us know whether you want to send a photo or see a Physician. We will guide you further either way,
Take care,

Hi Doctor,
Thankyou for the response. I have uploaded a pic depicting the location of hardness.
This is the waist line exactly to describe. It feels like nerves / Cellulite.
No pain and a burning sensation at my belly button some times..

Brief Answer:
Could be Cellulitis or a Paraumbilical hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, It could be Umbilical cellulitis or an indolent paraumbilical hernia.
Does there appear any swelling in the area when you cough or strain?
If yes then it would be a Paraumbilical hernia.
If not, then it would be evolving Cellulitis of the umbilicus. Is there any discharge from the navel?
You should get examined by a Surgeon and you might require a course of antibiotics along with anaerobic cover for 5 to 7 days which would resolve the issue. But get it examined for confirmation.
There is nothing to worry about but it would be better to have it shown and necessary treatment taken.
If they confirm it is a mild inflammation then antibiotics would be required.
Do let me know accordingly.
Take care,
Dr Rishi, New XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
