What Causes Weakness, Chest Discomfort And Chills In A 43 Year Old Person?

Question: Went to the ER 2 days ago. Feeling weak, shaky, and with very mild discomfort in my chest. Doctors did a lot of tests for high blood pressure which was not high enough for them to get to concerned (there words). Also did an EKG on me and said it was o.k. Did blood tests and urine tests and could not come up with anything specific. There thoughts were to take it easy for a couple days and try going back to work. Felt o.k. when I woke this morning, but as soon as I started to doing even light activities all my symptoms came back. Now I noticed that my left leg, especially my foot started to feel numb slightly, and I was breathing a little harder than I should be for what I was doing and I started to sweat quite a bit even though it was nice and cool out.

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about; nothing organic found

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Your young age of 43 years old makes you have significantly lower risk for cardiovascular diseases, in comparison with ages above 55. Since all the tests done in the emergency room came back normal, then it means that cardiac (and other organ origin) of the episode you had rules out any pathological disorder. At the moment you felt the symptoms, you probably "panicked" to "what is wrong with me?" and so you felt the mentioned phenomena. I also think that it is imperative for you to go back to work and have a 60-minutes a day physical activity, such as walking, jogging or biking, or whatever suits you better or you like doing. Everytime the human organism undergoes a certain amounts of stress, the rush of adrenalin may be accompanied with high heart rate, harder breathing and/or other symptoms, which the brain produces and interprets them as symptoms, such as you numbness in your foot. My recommendation is for you to try and relax. If these phenomena become truly worrisome and affect your everyday duties or work activities, then a consult with a psychiatrist would be recommended.

I hope I was helpful. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton

XXXXXXX doctor thinks a cardiac stress test may show more. What are your thoughts on this?

Brief Answer:
Not counterindicated

Detailed Answer:
Hi again and welcome back.

It is certainly not counterindicated and every doctor has his opinion. I, personally, would not follow-up with a cardiac stress test at this moment (young age for coronary disease, atypical symptoms, first-time episode). If this would help you calm and reassure, then go ahead and do it. No counterindications per se, it's merely, as I stated, that factors do not converge to proceed with that test.

I hope my follow-up is helpful. If you do not have further questions, please close the discussion and rate the answer.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
