What Causes Weight Gain Despite A Normal Thyroid Report?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Jul 2016
Question: I have had diagnosed ulcerative proctitis/colitis for 10+ years (now 47 yr old female). I have sudden weight gain, 25 lbs in the last 6 months. The weight gain is mostly around my midsection- went from size 10 slacks to size 16. My thyroid tests are normal. I had a colonoscopy six months ago that showed no progression of the disease. Are there other tests I should be asking for to find the cause of the weight gain?

Brief Answer:
Evaluation and diet plan

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the query.
I suggest you to get the following tests done
Liver panel
HbA1c
Lipid profile
Blood glucose and insulin level

Long term mesalamine may not be the culprit but do check with your treating doctor and pose this question to him.

A 2500 Calorie diet would actually is high for you. I would be advising at 1800 Cal to maximum of 2000 cal per day. So you are not losing weight with 2500. Protein shakes are good and make you full and suppress appetite. You may continue them.

If all the above tests are normal you should consider seeing a Dietitian.
