What Causes Weight Gain, Tremors, Allergies Along With Depression?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: My 10 year old son has several seemingly minor symptoms that I somehow think might be connected and want to know where to start supporting his body. Often times he:
*cannot get enough to drink/ dehydrates easily
*despite being an avid tennis player and eating organic balanced meals he cannot seems to gain weight fast - heavy for his age
*says his hands are "shaky" when trying writing and using fine motor skills - though not apparent to those around him
*has frequent nose bleeds - sometimes every day for a while
*seems to have some slight environmental allergies (maybe dust/mold?) but I cannot seem to find the common thread - gets stuffy nose/doesn't breathe easily in certain situations
*sometimes mood swings enormously from giddy and hyperactive to a sudden plunge into sadness/depression
*has developed a bit of an odd running gait (maybe due to weight gain? runs a bit straight legged)

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern about the health of your son.
All the symptoms you mentioned are not indicative for a specific condition that could explain them.
It might be pretty normal for a kid in his age not to gain weight easily, most if he is engaged in a sportive activity like playing tennis.
Frequent nose bleeds are common in his age.The most common cause is irritation of nasal mucosa due to minor trauma, picking the nose or due to dry weather.
Allergies to dust ,moles, polens can also cause nose bleeds due to inflammation of nasal mucosa. In these cases the bleeding is limited.
The shakiness of his hands ,might be just his sensation since it is not objective (means you can not observe it).
The mood swings are common in this age.
All the symptoms you described might be not of concern and common for his age but an evaluation by a his doctor is necessary.

The most appropriate thing to do is to consult a physician and get him examined.
A physical examination is necessary.
He may need to run some tests just in case:
-Complete blood count
-Metabolic profile
-Thyroid function tests

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
