What Causes Weight Loss After Reducing Sugar Consumption?
Question: I am 70 year old male in excellent health but have always been slender and able to eat anything I want and not gain weight. Recently my doctor told me that I don't have diabetes but that I better cut down on excess sugar consumption. I immediately cut out sugar in coffee, ice cream, yogurt, candy, etc. I also have cut down on fat consumption ( less ice cream, bakery goods, etc.) I seem, however, to losing weight. I am normally 170 to 175 pounds and as a young person was at 155 or so. Now I am at 165 and my wife says I look like skin and bones and seem to be losing weight. I have been taking tumeric, garlic, ginger, vitamin B-12, vitamin D-3, The Prostate Formula with Saw Palmetto since my urine is sometimes a bit slow, and something called Flexiprin for joint pain. I now have no joint pain, sugar level is fine, and a doctor recently put the pressure wrap around my upper arm and said my heart rate was like a teenager's.
I have had toe nail fugnus for most of my life, but am now determined to get rid of it with lemon juice, tea tree oil, Nonyx, and vinegar. Seems to be working. In 30 days I should be free of the fungus. Saying all this to see if any of this could be causing my weight loss. I feel fine, but am worried a bit about the weight loss.

Brief Answer:
may just need more calories
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
You sound very healthy. When you cut back on the sugar you probably did not need to cut back on the fat. Unless your cholesterol is high then I would just focus on cutting back the sweets.
If your doctor has not checked your thyroid tests lately he or she may want to do that because a high thyroid level could make it hard for you to gain weight.
Check with your doctor and make sure that you have had all the normal screeing tests for a man your age. Then if all is normal just enjoy a little more food each day and don't worry about your weight.
