What Could Cause Bleeding During A Bowel Movement?

There are a few possibilities for bleeding with a bowel movement.
The most innocuous reason is if the stool was hard and caused the anorectal tissue to tear. This is usually short lasting as it heals up quickly. The blood is not mixed in with the stool but is on the outside or on the TP only.
Another fairly superficial cause is inflamed or irritated hemorrhoids. Again, the blood would be just on the TP. If hemorrhoids are bleeding though, usually they will cause discomfort too so you would know that they are the source.
Other causes of bleeding can be from inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, but typically there are other symptoms that go along with this such as abdominal pain.
Sometimes blood comes out of the vagina if hard stool irritates a cervical polyp through the tissues that separate the vagina and rectum.
Bleeding is a concern though if you have not had a normal screening colonoscopy, or have not had one done recently, because colon polyps and growths can cause bleeding too.
So, unless you know for sure the source of the bleeding, I do recommend that you go in to see your doctor to have this checked out.
