What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 4 Apr 2016
Question: Hi i'm a 29 year old female i have had chronic wrist pain and swelling for over 5 years. It all started when i fell and broke my fall with my right hand. I went to several doctors and was told i have a tfcc tear. I had arthroscopic surgery to repair it about 4 years ago and i still have pain and swelling. I also haven't regained full mobility in my wrist. Several xrays and mris later i was told that they suspect I may have keinbocks disease. An xray revealed that i have a negative ulnar variance in both wrists. Did a bone scan that indicates osteonecrosis of the lunate bone. I also had several MRi's done my last one indicated sclerotic bone changes on the lunate bone and a radiolunotriquetral ligament appered thickened and heterogenous. Now the last doctor i saw said he doesn't suspect keinbocks disease and doesn't actually know what's wrong with my wrist. He said that some people just have to live with psin post surgery and that it's probably just scarring that's causing this pain. I need help finding out what's wrong with my wrist please. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Wrist arthritis with DRUJ Arthritis. Needs steroid injection, medication, l

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Can you grade your wrist pain from 1 to 10?

Do you have pain in any of the small joints of the hands?

From your reports it appears that you do not have any kind of wrist instability or TFCC tear.

Your Xray shows negative ulnar variance. This means that you could be having DRUJ arthritis at the distal radio ulnar joint. There doesn't appear to be any wrist subluxation.

Wrist joint space is reduced.

It appears you have post traumatic arthritis of the wrist joint and DRUJ.

You need to apply hot packs to the painful region. Avoid weight lifting. A steroid shot in the joint will help with the arthritic pain if you have been in oral pain killers.

There doesn't appear to be anything surgically wrong with your wrist but later if if it gets worse and instability develops, surgery may be needed.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
