Posted on Tue, 30 May 2017
Question: Can genital herpes that has been inactive for several years and only on the penis recur and relocate to the rectal area? Redness, slight itching, maybe very slight swelling. Over the counter Abreva of any use? Colonoscopy scheduled for XXXXXXX 5 to monitor moderate risk factor shown by MRI. Any affect on the colonoscopy?

Brief Answer:
In Herpes + ve person Anal Herpes can flare up after of many years.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

You are known to have Herpes Infection which is dormant since many years however you have developed redness ,itching and swelling around anal region which you suspect it to be due to Anal Herpes .

I shall be happy if you can post me more details to help me in making precise comments
1) Is there any rash or blisters in anal region ?
2) Is there pain ?
3) Is there any discharge from the Anus ?

The itching and swelling around anal region can be due to a staphylococcal infection of sub cutaneous tissue and not necessarily a flare up of dormant Herpes infection and need to get it confirmed by microscopic examination of a scraping of affected skin to detect herpes Virus .

Take antibiotic like Doxicycline with soothing agent like Nupercainal ointment for local application for a week ..

Ensure to have soft ,non spicy diet with leafy vegetables .Avoid meat and high protein diet .

There is no harm in using Abreva .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

No discharge, not sure if some of the small "bumps" are blisters. Mostly redness that extends up to near the scrotum. No pain: some feeling, but mostly very slight itching.
Can I use nupercainal along with the abreva? Is it over the counter medication?
Abreva may be helping after starting just yesterday. Redness and feeling sensations are less now than yesterday.
Thank you for your help. The original herpes and the subsequent outbreaks previously were only on the penis.

Brief Answer:
You can use Nupercainal along with Abreva

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for feedback .

It is unlikely to be Anal Herpes .

There is no harm in using Nupercainal along with Abreva .No idea whether it is available over the counter in U.S,

Personal perineal hygiene by cleaning the area twice with warm water will help to resolve the issue faster.

Thanks and Regards
