What Do My Lab Test Results Indicate?
Question: I have had chronic sinusitis for around 6 months now.
I did various nose swabs and throat swabs, which have turned up nothing. Last week I asked the doctor if we could do a mucus culture (as I spit out yellow/green mucus every morning). I received the results today and the test showed that I have moderate predominant growth of Methicillin Resistant Staphyloccocus Aureus.
I am currently on long term azithromycin (250mg 3x a week), this was given to me by an ENT specialist back in October, before we knew the cause of the problem. Mainly for its anti inflammatory action.
I am not booked in to see the ENT again for a while, and am wondering whether Azithromycin is the best treatment for MRSA? Or do I need a different course of antibiotics?

Brief Answer:
You need stronger antibiotics.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. The deep nasal swab is done for MRSA. Your sputum culture has turned out positive for MRSA which is a resistant bacteria.
2. You may be a carrier.
3. MRSA/ VISA / VRSA requires stronger antibiotics ( such as rifampicin). I am not sure if azithromycin will be enough. You can also ask for MIC values of the culture and sensitivity report.
4. Avoid self medication with MRSA. Let a physician decide.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them
. Regards.
