What Do My Protein Electrophoresis Serum Test Results Indicate?
Regarding the Protein Electrophoresis Serum test, IF I had a mono spike at all, would it be included in the total protein amount (7.6)?
Albumin EP Quest: 4.7 gm/dL (range 3.8-4.8)
Alpha-1 Globulin: 0.3 gm/dL (range .2-.3)
Alpha-2 Globulin: 0.6 gm/dL (range .5-.9)
Beta 1 Globulin: 0.5 gm/dL (range .4-.6)
Beta 2 Globulin: 0.3 gm/dL (range .2-.5)
EP Interpretation: SEE NOTE (not sure what note is, can't see it online)
Gamma Globulin: 1.2 gm/dL (range .8-1.7)
Mono Spike: SEE NOTE (not sure what note is, can't see it online)
Tot Protein: 7.6 gm/dL (range 6.1-8.1)
Next to mono spike, it says "See note" but I do not see a note on my results page online. I have a call in to my dr to ask why I cannot see what the note says. Thank you.
Your may have some monoclonal gammopathy.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
You have report of protein electrophoresis and slmost all values are in normal range.
Mono spike means there is monoclonal protein which are seen in paraprotienemia.
So you may have some paraprotienemia. However all value are almost normal. So it can be some non malignant lesions.
Don't worry about cancer. Its not cancer.
Please tell me about your symptoms and other findings like esr, calcium and other reports you have already gone through. So that I can help you further. Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
Is "mono spike" is the name of the test, or do I definitely have a mono spike since it was listed on the lab results page under the protein serum test? Again there was no value next to it. Is the mono spike value included in the total protein count??
To answer your question, here are my health conditions that I know of: in feb 2013 I found out I have a fibroma on my fibula (found this out when getting a routine X-ray from sprained ankle). Never had additional follow-up testing. My sedimentation rate blood test came back normal in 2014, as well as my CBC except that my RBC was slightly lower that normal after the birth of my son last February. My Epstein Barr results came back with high antibodies. I have hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue. My main symptoms are vision problems while driving, slight vertigo/lightheadedness, exhaustion after over exertion, fatigue.
Do you recommend further testing? If so what type of Doctor would be able to help me?
Thank you.
Can you also explain why you are certain it's not cancer? Thanks again.
Oh - and I have MTHFR C677T Heterozygous.
Mono spike suggest mono clonal antibodies.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Mono spike suggest Mono clonal immunoglobulins.
However we presume that because its written on test page. You should read the note properly. What they have written in note is important.
But one thing is sure that your immunoglobulin levels are not in range of malignancy even if it is M spike or not. So nothing to worry about malignancy is sure.
From your history and symptoms there are no any sign or symptoms of malignancy.
So even if you have M spike it is due to monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. It is seen in many asymptomatic patients. In multiple myeloma there is very high ESR, high calcium, renal failure and other symptoms like pathological fracture.
So just be relaxed.
Please see the note and if it indicates that you have Mono spike then you should go for repeat testing after 1 year.
You also have MTHFR C677T hetrozygous mutation. Your should take methyle folate and methye cobalemine to avoid symptoms.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
1. Is my 1 year old son at risk for having the mono spike IF I do have it?
2.I checked my labs and the last time my calcium was checked was XXXXXXX of 2014 and it was 9.4 (normal range). I looked back on labs from the last 5 years and have had calcium checked a total of 5 times, and each time it was in normal range (usually around 9.4).
3. I checked my Sedimentation Rate (SR) lab which was done in October 2013, and the result was 2mm/hr (range 0-20). Is that the same as ESR?
4. C-Reactive Protein lab done in October 2013 was <0.4 mg/dL (range is <0.7).
5. I have had total protein checked several times as well over the last 5 years, and each time it was within normal range (usually around 7.6).
6. Does having chronic Epstein Barr virus affect the Electrophoresis Serum test levels, or can it influence mono spike?
7. Regarding my MTHFR Hetero C677T, I take Seeking Health Optimal Prenatal vitamin since I am still breastfeeding my 1 year old. When I am done breastfeeding, do you recommend a brand of methyle folate and methye cobalemine, and how much should I take daily? My vitamin B6 and B12 levels have been very high in recent testing.
Thank you very much!
Thank you again.
You don't have mono spike so nothing needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
First of all your Note in report suggest nothing detected. So nothing is needed now. Just be relaxed.
1. Your son has no risk of that.
2. Your calcium is in normal range so its normal and fine.
3. Yes sedimentation is same as ESR. It is normal so no chance of paraproteinemia.
4. Your CRP is also normal.
5. Yes your protein over 7 gm is normal all the time. Nothing to worry.
6. EB virus generally don't affect protein electrophoresis or mono spike.
7. Macfolate are available in market containing methyl folate and methylecobalemine. It contains active form of vitamins. Because you have enzymatic deficiency so your body is not able to use folic acid and vitamin b12 directly. So active forms are required. But you should take dosage according to treating doctors advise.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.
