What Do The Following Fasting And PP Blood Sugar Test Results Indicate?
Question: Hi doctor,
My mom is 50 years of age. Her height is 5.8 and weight 65 kg. Back in XXXXXXX , when she had her fasting and PP blood sugar test done on venous blood(blood from arm) , her readings where 85 and 103mg/dl respectively. Just to add her PP test was taken 2 hrs after having 2 wheat floor chapatis and a cup of tea(very less sugar in it).
This was XXXXXXX After a month and a half. when she had a casual sugar test on capillary blood through glucometer, her FBG came out to be 103 mg/dl. The night before she had rice 10 and half hours before the test.
Besides that, she doesn't have a family background of diabetes.
Is her sugar levels normal or is there something to be concerned about?

Brief Answer:
Glucometer reading used to know control and not for diagnosis.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.
Capillary blood glucose of 103 can be used as screening tool to confirm result by Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) or HbA1c.
But Fasting & post-prandial blood sugar levels done one month back are absolutely within normal limits.
So one can safely neglect glucometer reading of 103.
Once year OGTT or HbA1c are standardized tests to confirm the diabetic status.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Doctor, I will surely have my mom's HbA1c and OGTT test checked once she she comes back from travel. I have a very basic question in my follow up.
Does the capillary blood glucose(finger pricked blood) for fasting always tends to be higher than what is taken out from the arm.
Also, you being the best one to judge, if one has to go by the FBG and PPBG readings taken on 4th XXXXXXX 2016, and the glucometer reading on 28th Aug, 2016 would you push her to take the HBA1c test or all these readings can be safely ignored.

Brief Answer:
Capillary blood sugar level usually higher than venous blood sugar level.
Detailed Answer:
Capillary blood sugar is always higher than corresponding venous blood sugar level when measured accurately.
Glucometer reading are not accurate. There always some difference in glucometer reading and blood sugar done by laboratory method.
Considering her blood sugar levels you can safely ignore glucometer reading of 103 if there is no family history of Diabetes.
If family history of Diabetes is there better to do OGTT or HbA1c.
Hope this helps you.
