What Do These Ultrasound Scans During 38 Weeks Of Pregnancy Indicate?
My wife XXXXXXX (covered by the same insurance plan I hold) is 38 weeks and 4 days pregnant currently.
We did a scan on 17-Dec-2014 (when she was 37 weeks 6 days pregnant) and it was discovered she had an AFI to be 20.0 (polyhydramnios) and there was a loose cord around the fetal neck.
Our doctor recommended another scan, that we did on 22-Dec-2014 (when she was 38 weeks 4 days) and that report shows AFI to be 15-17 (adequate liquor) and there was NO cord around the neck.
My questions now:
1- I am unsure which report to trust now. What is the best way to adjudge this? Both radiologists are defending their reports and my doctor thinks such a difference within 5 days is not common. If I attach the copy of the images, would you be able to recommend? Please let me know.
2- Is it advisable to go for another scan now? Are multiple ultrasounds OK at this stage? can we be 100% sure it does not affect the health of the mother and baby?
3- Finally, what is the expected normal range of AFI at this stage (i.e. 38 weeks 4 days). My doctor thinks if indeed there is a condition of polyhydramnios, then c-section is preferred over normal delivery. Would really appreciate your comments around this also.
Please let me know if you need additional details to answer this question.
Thanks,
XXXXXXX
Everything is fine
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I read your query and I understand your concerns about ultrasound scan reports.
Following is my reply
1. Trust the recent scan report of 22nd Dec. Cord cam unentangle itself and liqor reduces as gestational age advances. This is right report.
2 . 5 days difference in report is common. Dont worry about it. You can attach copy of scan.
3. More ultrasound scans wont affect mother or baby but are unnecessary as you are not going to gain more information than you have now. Wait for a week.
4. Polyhydramnios is when AFI is more than 26. Hence she didn't have Polyhydramnios in first or second report. She is halthy and fine.
5. I think you are worrying unnecessarily. Everything looks fine. You don't need any scans.
6. Cesarean section is not required. Your wife can undergo normal delivery.

Normal reports
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I saw both reports.
Everything looks absolutely normal and there is no reason to worry about anything. She is likely to have normal vaginal delivery with healthy baby.
Regards
File - scan 2 is the latest taken dec 22, 2014.
Thanks again.
