Question : On April 23 rd, My daughter ( 9 years and 9 months) had TSH >100, FREE T4 2.15 and ANTI TPO ANTIBODY 236.2 in her thyroid test. Doctor prescribed her to take 50mg. The medicine started on April 25 th. Now, after 2 months, on XXXXXXX 26 th, her report is: TSH 6.39, T4 8.9, and Free T4 on empty stomach 1.14. What this indicate about the dose of the drug? Her weight is only 26.5. This much dose of the drug will anyway harm her? Any side effects will affect her?

contimue thyronorm
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
Your daughter definitely has hypothyroidism.
Possibly auto immune because of positive tpo antibodies.
This type will need thyroid hormone replacement mostly for many years.
There is no other alternative.
There are no side effects if taken under proper medical supervision and frequently tested.
Regarding the dose you need to continue your present dose and repeat test after every three months.
Target for TSH less than 5.
Wishing your child good health
Regards
Dr Arun

But today doctor suggested to increase the dose to 75 mg. I fear it is too much for her weight (26.5). What do you suggest? And doctor........ how this happened to my daughter? Is hypothyroidism common to children or rare? What are the reasons?

                                    Brief Answer:
Try with 50
Detailed Answer:
Try with 50 for another month atleast before increasing dose.
Auto immune happens on it's own. It's body fighting against itself. This is common in kids. It is not rare. But easily and should be treated.
