What Does A Fasting Blood Sugar Level Of 169 Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: My husband has allowed me to take a fasting blood sugar for him and it was 169. He has a family history (both parents) of diabetes. We have an appointment in February with a physician but for now, he is asking me what sort of foods he should eat. Is there a suggested carbohydrate or sugar "allotment" per meal? I'm asking that he cut out white starches or cut them down (eating only 1/2 of the bun from his sandwich/burger etc) I know he will get tired of salad and green beans quickly as he's not a big vegetable person.

Brief Answer:
About Diabetes treatment:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I can understand your concern regarding to your husband health.
To make a diagnosis of Diabetes , 2 different measures of blood glucose are needed (>125 mg/dl fasting or >200 mg/dl after eating) and HbA1c that is an indicator of the blood glucose level of the last three months.
The treatment depends on the HbA1c, the BMI of the patient, age, the presence of other morbidities (Hypertension, high lipid profile, cardiac pathologies ect).
Usually in overweight (BMI 26-30) or obese (BMI >30) and when the HbA1c level is not to high (Over 7.5%) diet and physical activity is recommended.
Diet consists in reducing the carbohydrates substituting them with proteins. Your treating physician will recommend to see a dietitian and make a diabetes meal plan.

A diabetes meal plan is a guide that tells you how much and what kinds of food you can choose to eat at meals and snack times.

A good meal plan should fit in with his schedule, eating habits, tastes and lifestyles.
A diabetes diet is a healthy-eating plan that's naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. Key elements are fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Hope the information will help, will be a pleasure to answer further questions.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
