What Does A Hard Lump Near The Right Side Of The Navel Indicate?

Question: I have a hard lump (at least 2 cm in diameter) about 2-3" to the right of my navel. I have a very hard, distended upper abdomen, neither tender to touch. I have had a scan of my liver, pancreas and gall bladder, all normal.
No bowel problems. I have had 4-6 episodes of extreme pain and tenderness, with gas and sometimes diarrhea and when this happens I also have a backache/blinding headache. I am not consuming alcohol or high fat foods, pretty clean diet. Not sure what my next step is, I just know it's not my normal.
thank you.

Brief Answer:
Seems soft tissue lesion or less likely para umbilical hernia.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.com
I have evaluated your query thoroughly .
* This seems soft tissue lesion either sebaceous cyst , lipoma more likely or other
less likely possibility of para umbilical hernia .
Kindly provide further details so that I can answer your query completely .
1. Lump - duration , progress since appearance , overlying skin changes if any .
2. Anything visible over the surface ( if so a photo pic as an attachment is highly
recommended ) .
3. Is there any obvious bulge when coughing or straining .
Awaiting for your response .
Regards .

I noticed the lump about 4 months ago. It wasn't painful and I wasn't having any GI issues. Nothing remarkable on the surface of my abdomen.
Your explanation of lipoma, etc makes sense in that my weight has fluctuated; I thought it was a hernia but it doesn't protrude visibly. Not painful; in the am when I am lying prone I can push on it and "break it up" but it never goes away and has not gotten larger.
My concern is the rigidity of my abdomen and the episodes I have experienced of extreme pain, headaches. I really thought I had gallstones but the ultrasound ruled that out.
The doctor I had been seeing has closed his practice in my city. I saw him 2 months ago at his practice but he did not examine me physically re the lump but ordered the labs/ultrasound. The tests were extensive including a blood test to rule out colon cancer indicators as I had not had a colonoscopy in 12 years (my bad). I did have a gyno exam less than 1 year which included pelvic ultrasound, all good.
I realize I need to find a new local doctor (who will want to order all new tests, insurance copays!!) but I would like to narrow down what my problem may be and ask my current treating physician for a referral. Do I need to see a gastroenterologist, a general internist?
I can live with the condition but I'm concerned that I may be trivializing it. I am an intelligent, well-educated woman but I need some guidance. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Follow up guidelines narrated in details .
Detailed Answer:
Welcome dear .
Thanks for the details .
* Now that sense to think in two directions .
1. Local part swelling definitely goes in favor of lipoma or sebaceous cyst ( not
necessary to be visible on the surface ) .
Gives only local discomfort , no stretching in whole abdomen or head ache .
Absolutely benign , nothing to worry till meet the doctor .
2. Abdomen rigidity with head ache indicates some sort of intestine infection which
require basic laboratory in form of complete blood counts and ruling out
other conditions as enteric fever or so .
Again , I do not agree with possibility of any intra abdominal lump here .
* In my opinion , a Consultant surgeon ( General surgeon ) is best person to
handle the case after clinical examination , no need to meet gastroenterologist.
* My one question please , when you had gone for the ultrasound , was there
this swelling and if it was there radiologist had examined it or not ?
Hope this makes it more precise .
Always welcome for further assistance .
Wishing you fine health ahead .
Regards .

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX It's my fault as when I had the painful episodes I didn't reference the "lump" to my doctor, altho I had mentioned it previously.
The ultrasound examined liver, pancreas, gallbladder and ruled out gallstones.
I realize I wasn't emphatic about this lump since I was convinced it might be gallstones...the probably with "self-diagnosis".
What should I ask my current doctor to do re: referral? He did a complete blood panel a few months ago that I don't think indicated much but perhaps not the right tests for this.
I appreciate your insight, thanks again. Dianne

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound local part .blood test for abdomen infection .
Detailed Answer:
Welcome Dianne ,
* Even though you had not told at that ultrasound , if at all there was internal
extension of the lump was there he or she must had seen without your
telling as this area is just around lower part of liver probably , so do not worry
about it at present .
* You should ask current doctor
1. Prescription for Ultrasound examination of the local part .
2. Relevant blood test for head ache with abdomen infection ( enteric fever is
one major possibility for these symptoms ) .
3. BP measurement .
Happy to help you always .
