What Does A Red And Tender Bump On Head Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: My son just told me about a bump on his head that he's had for awhile and won't go away. I took a look and it's about the size of a quarter, and red at the center of it. He couldn't tell me how long he's had it (he's only 6) but it sounded like it's been weeks or maybe even months. He said it hurts when he touches it, but he didn't tell me about it because he thought it would just go away on its own.

Brief Answer:
Inflammed area...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Red and tender bump indicates the bump is an inflammed one. Since its on the head, it is most likely a blocked gland or inflammed hair follicle.

I would refer him to a general surgeon who can examine the bump closely and decide the treatment - either it can be incising it or antibiotic therapy.
In the interim, you should apply warm compresses on the affected area and start him on acetaminophen (tylenol). The dose of tylenol depend on his current weight. So please specify his weight in your follow up.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
