Question: What does "there is EDEMA at L5-S1" mean? I don't know what "EDEMA" is or what it means

Edema refers to the build up of fluid in the tissues result in swelling. It can occur due to: (1) trauma,
(2) infection,
(3)chronic diseases such as kidney or liver disease,
(4) chronic venous disease,
(5)side effect of medication
(6)inflammatory conditions such as arthritis

Edema at this level of the spine may be due trauma, inflammation, infection.It means that there is swelling or build up of fluid at this point.

Based on your symptoms and history , your doctor would be able to determine the most likely cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
