Question: When I was in my 20's I would usually have 4-6 drinks (beer and wine ) on a Friday and Saturday night. Usually would not drink on the other days of the week. These amounts began to moderate in my late 20's and 30's. In my mid-30's I noted my GGT was slightly elevated. As a result I stopped drinking entirely. My AST and ALT were fine. My GGT never returned to normal ranges. In my early 50's I started to drink some wine and occasional beer- usually 2- 3 glasses of wine on Friday and Saturday. Sometimes less, sometimes as many as 4 glasses. I am 5'11'" and my weight crept up to around 200lbs. I am now 53 and was worried about weight and started a low carb diet which has allowed me to lose about 25 lbs in the last 2 months. I also had my LFT's reviewed recently and now my AST and ALT are elevated to slightly below 2 x the normal limit. My GGT remains elevated like it has since my mid-30's. I feel great and have good energy and no other liver symptoms. My doc says we will do another LFT in about 2 months. He is not sure what the problem is . I have had many ultrasounds since my mid-30's and none showed anything remarkable. I asked if I should stop having any red wine. He said that having no alcohol will help but he said until we know more that a glass of red wine on Friday and Saturday is likely ok. He said we would revisit that after the next round of LFT. Any thoughts on what my issue is?
I should also say the recent LFT test was done after I had been on the low carb diet for about 2 weeks. The weight was coming off pretty fast at that point. I have never been diagnosed with fatty liver but I ate a lot of sugar and pasta and bread over the years and had accumulated a fair bit of belly fat. Now the belly fat has melted away and I feel very good.
