What Does "enlarged Lateral Ventricles" Indicate In An Ultrasound Report?
Question: I had a followup ultrasound on my twins today....baby B still has enlarged lateral ventricles....at 20 weeks they were measuring 1.06 CM and 1.07CM today, 24 weeks they are measuring between 1.2 and 1.3 CM....is this a large increase for this amount of time.
Also, I had a fetal MRI...Results as follows:
NEUROIMAGING FINDINGS: Corresponding to prior ultrasonography, there is a mild enlargement of the lateral ventricles which measure up to 12 MM. The brain otherwise appears normal for gestational age. The posterior fossa appears normal. There is no Chiari malformation. A normal Cavum Septum pellucidum is identified. No callosal digenesis is identified. There is no evidence of spinal dyraphism.
I don't know how concerned we should be, can you please advise.....also baby is in the 12 percentile for size

Brief Answer:
Yes. The ventricles are enlarged.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The increase in the size of lateral ventricles is definitely there. It is considerable over 4 weeks period. The chances of IUGR are also present.
This increase in size of the ventricles can be associated with problems in brain growth and development.
It is best to concentrate well on your diet so that baby can grow well.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.

so they have increased less than 2.4 MM in 4 weeks, is that really bad? What do you think about MRI results? Torch screen was negative as well....
Is general prognosis ok?
What can I do to improve diet....

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
An increase in the size is bad. MRI results show otherwise normal brain anatomy. It is too early to comment about the general prognosis right now.
It is best to have a protein rich diet and L-Arginine supplements to prevent any growth retardation of the babies.
Hope my answer is helpful.
