To be safe and have ot monitored more closely they are referring me to a breast surgeon so they can do another Exam and to be monitored since my mom had breast cancer (started with lung amd spreaded to immflamatory breast cancer) my question is why am i being referred, is that normal? Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Your concern regarding close follow up of fibrotic tissue in breast is understandable. I have served in a cancer research institute for few years and would like to share my knowledge with you.

A breast ultrasound is the best screening test for a woman of your age and your lump has been confirmed to be a fibrotic tissue region. Since this is probably the first occasion you have consulted your doctors and perhaps the first ultrasound, it is important to closely follow up your lump for at least the first 6 months to look for any changes. Since your mother had inflammatory breast cancer, your doctor wants you to be under the guidance of a specialist surgeon.

It is a standard procedure to do detailed investigation in all women with a strong family history of breast cancer. Your doctor will also make you aware of self breast examination and you should palpate your breast lump at least once every 15 days and look for any increase in the lump and change in color or texture of skin over breast. Should there be any such changes then you must contact your doctor immediately.

Though I assure you that your doctors have been careful in doing the ultrasound and saying its a fibrotic tissue area, I would require the exact details of ultrasound report to re confirm what your doctors have said.

In my experience, a confirmed fibrotic tissue on ultrasound is not a cancer if it remains the same for at least 6 months.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Wish you a Merry Christmas.

Hope your query is answered.

Hello,

Thabk you for your detailed response. I appreciate yoir feedback. So to confirm, this all sounds very normal tegarding the referral as a precaution. But havimg fibrotic tissue doesnt increase you risk of cancer? Closely watching because it could change into a cancerous lump?

Brief Answer:
Change is rarely seen but you must take precautions

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

Having fibrotic tissue is most likely benign; but always it is better to follow it up for 6 months for any changes and this is to protect your health. Less than one in 10000 can change to a cancerous lump and it is almost certain that your lump will remain benign as seen after 6 months or more. But as a patient you also should be aware of safe health practices and report to your doctors should there be the slightest of doubt regarding appearance or pain, change in size, color or any pus discharge form the nipples.

Also please feel your armpits for any small lumps regularly and inform your doctor if you have any doubts.

Wish you a Merry Christmas.

Hope your query is answered.
