different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Blood in the urine can be due to different possible causes. Some of the more common causes are: (1) infection of an aspect of the urinary tract (includes bladder, urethra, ureter or kidneys)
This would normally be accompanied by some or all of the following symptoms- passing urine frequently, discomfort on urination, urgency , fever, abdominal pain, change in the odor or color of the urine.
(2)stone in the urinary tract- there may be pain along with this
(3)side effect of medications- anti coagulants (eg warfarin, plavix, xarelto etc)
(4)trauma to the urinary tract
(5)bleeding disorder
(6)disease of the kidneys- there are certain diseases that cause inflammation and damage to certain parts of the kidneys, particularly an area called the glomeruli that can cause bleeding
(7)cysts - sacs in the kidneys
(8)cancer
(9)idiopathic- in some cases the cause is not found
There are a lot of different causes of blood in the urine. To determine the cause, if if it continues, you would need to be seen by your doctor for assessment.
This assessment would include a complete history of any relevant symptoms which may point to a cause, physical examination (general and abdominal) along with urine analysis.
In some cases urine may also be sent to the lab.
Imaging (ultrasound) is also sometimes requested as well to take a look at the kidneys, ureter (tube connecting kidneys and bladder), bladder and urethra (tube from the bladder to outside).
Treatment would depend on the cause found
